Report Title:

Corrosion of HPW-Steel in Seawater

R.B. Griffin, R.E. White, and J-F. Yan, Texas A&M University

Report Date:

February, 1991
Electrochemical methods were applied to the investigation of corrosion of homopolar welded steel (HPW- steel) in artificial seawater (ASW). A numerical polarization curve generated by a simple mathematical model was fitted to the experimental data. The corrosion rates of HPW-steel at different temperatures were obtained and compared with those of its parent metal. The current densities due to the individual reactions and the temperature effect on the corrosion rate strongly indicate that oxygen diffusion process dominates the cathodic reaction and hence controls the corrosion rate of HPW-steel in seawater.
