Ultrasonic NDE of Offshore Structures with Curved Surfaces

Konstantin Maslov (PostDoc)

Nondestructive evaluation of a tubular member (pipe, cylinder) using lasers and/or ultrasonic transducers.

Offshore structures make extensive use of tubulars, pipes, etc. Special interest in composite tubulars.

1) Use transducers with curved surfaces.
2) Use flat transducers and some advanced mathematics to sort out the physics of the experiment. Use lasers to excite and detect guided waves without contacting the tubular.

This work will extend the state of the art(where only objects/components with flat faces can be tested) to components with curved surfaces. Cylinders are just one example of curved surfaces. October 1996 to September 1997

A methodology for laser/ultrasonic use of tubulars
