2001-2002 OTRC PROJECT: Deepwater Field Measurements

OBJECTIVE:

The objectives of this project are to (1) assess data from deepwater floating drilling and production systems that are presently available to calibrate, validate, and improve design analysis tools for deepwater structures, moorings, and risers, and identify needs for additional data; and (2) identify opportunities for initiating field measurement program(s) to provide needed data.

APPROACH:

Survey the industry to identify both existing data and critical issues and needs relative to validating and/or improving design tools.  With this survey as a basis, a workshop would be held to assess needs and identify opportunities to initiate needed field measurement programs. 

DEPLOYMENT OF RESULTS:

Project results will define and justify technical needs and opportunities to develop needed field measurement programs.  The open workshop process and featuring these results at an offshore engineering conference (e.g. OTC, OMAE) would publicize and broaden interest among potential participants, and facilitate launching needed field measurement programs. 

ANTICIPATED PROJECT DURATION:  1 year

PROJECT PLAN FOR YEAR 2001-2002:

Scope of Work:  Survey the industry worldwide (oil and gas companies, design contractors and consultants) to identify existing data as well as critical issues and needs relative to validating and/or improving design tools for deepwater structures, moorings and risers. This information would be summarized and provide the basis for a workshop to discuss, assess, and prioritize data needs. 

The workshop would seek to engage operators, designers, technologists, and regulators in the discussions and assessments.  The workshop would likely require a couple of days.  Structures, mooring systems, and risers would be addressed in separate sessions due to the different expertises involved. Data requirements would be assessed and prioritized based on relative needs to validate or improve design analysis tools and the expected opportunities to reduce costs and/or risks.  Opportunities for initiating needed field measurement programs would be developed at the workshop.  Opportunities for sharing existing data would also be discussed, with the aim of facilitating the use of existing data.   

Anticipated Results:  The workshop results, including a recommended path forward, would be documented in a report.  An effort would be made to publicize the results though a special session at an offshore engineering conference.

Estimated Completion Date: August 2003

Project Description: The objectives of this project are to (1) assess data from deepwater floating drilling and production systems that are presently available to calibrate, validate, and improve design analysis tools for deepwater structures, moorings, and risers, and identify needs for additional data; and (2) identify opportunities for initiating field measurement program(s) to provide needed data.

Progress: A summary report of the May 3-4, 2002 workshop is being prepared. The workshop was quite successful in providing a forum for participants to discuss sensitive issues. However, because of the sensitivity issues, most presenters were reluctant to submit their vugraf presentations for publication. The summary report is therefore being prepared by distilling the recorded transcripts of the presentations and discussions, which is turning to be a larger endeavor than originally anticipated.

Project Description: The objectives of this project are to (1) assess data from deepwater floating drilling and production systems that are presently available to calibrate, validate, and improve design analysis tools for deepwater structures, moorings, and risers, and identify needs for additional data; and (2) identify opportunities for initiating field measurement program(s) to provide needed data.

Progress: An international workshop was held on May 3-4, 2002. Leading scientist and engineers from industry and academia attended. Presentations and discussions addressed the following areas
1. Deepwater Field Studies and Measurements - oceanographic findings that impact offshore system design
2. Loading Mechanisms and Platform Response - recent thinking on fundamental mechanics, design issues and how to best utilize model basins.
3. Industry Lead Field Measurement Studies - Discussion on field measurement objectives and approaches being applied to address information gaps in offshore design
4. Deepwater Systems and Future Field Measurements - Discussion on future research needed to fill technical information gaps for offshore system design.
Many useful ideas and possibilities were discussed at the workshop. These and the presentations will be published in the workshop proceedings.
